Intro to 3D Design for 3D Printing In-Person
Learn to design 3D objects in this fun 2.5-hour hands-on workshop!
Where: Gerstein Science Information Centre, Instruction Lab
When: Tuesday, June 12 2:10pm - 4:30pm
Instructors: Mike Spears, MADLab Manager & Erica Lenton, Gerstein Librarian
Gain familiarity with 3D modeling software and basic techniques of 3D design by following along with our demonstration and then trying assisted practice exercises. During the workshop you will have a chance to try out all the tools you need to create complex, precise 3D models using the free 3D modeling program 123D Design. Along the way we will discuss how virtual 3D models translate to 3D printed objects, and how to avoid basic design pitfalls that make it difficult to print your design.
WHAT'S COVERED:
- Hands-on practice with all the software tools you need to turn your ideas into physical objects at the Gerstein+MADLab 3D printing facility.
- Navigate the 3D workspace quickly and precisely without getting lost
- Recognize features and functions of 3D design software and turn 3D design jargon into part of your regular vocabulary
- Easily manipulate basic shapes and see how they compare with the printed product
- Practice building complex shapes by modifying and combining basic solids, or deriving new forms from 2D paths
- Evaluate the printability of your design, avoid design flaws that can confuse 3D printing software, and improve the look and feel of your printed object
- Break down complex real-world 3D object into 3D design operations and manipulations required to create a perfect virtual representation
- Design your own fun, customized 3D model suitable for 3D printing*
* note that only certified users are permitted to use the 3D printer. Get certified!
RECOMMENDED, NOT REQUIRED
- watch official 123D Design training videos prior to workshop
