Finding Data & Statistics: Resources for Researchers In-Person

This session will occur online and is facilitated by the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus. It is part of the library's  Digital Scholarship @UTSC Series as well as the Graduate Professional Skills Program.

Facilitators:

  • Deena Yanofsky, Data Librarian | Digital Scholarship Unit, University of Toronto Scarborough Library

What does every researcher need to understand a phenomenon? Data. The type of data researchers choose, however, can depend on many things including the research question, their skills, and the availability of resources.

This workshop will introduce participants to individual-level social science survey data from Canadian and international sources, including Statistics Canada, ICPSR, and the Consortium of European Social Science Data (CESSDA). Participants will work through hands-on exercises, with a focus on search strategies and techniques for discovering, viewing, and exporting current and historical data series on popular topics of research interest.

After taking this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • find and select data that answers a particular question
  • access and export pertinent data in order to prepare it for use
  • critically evaluate the quality of the data (and metadata)
  • provide a reference citation to the data
  • Please note: This workshop will not cover statistical concepts or tests. Only basic knowledge of Microsoft Excel is required.

Register here.
