Indigenous Personal Tax Literacy workshop In-Person

This workshop is open to all Indigenous students, faculty, and staff at U of T.

This workshop will touch on the Canadian Tax system (why do you need to file a tax return, where does your tax dollars go, etc), common types of incomes, on- and off-reserve income reporting, deductions and credits (including the Northern Residents Deduction, the Climate Action Incentive, and some of the benefits and credits related to tax filing. The presentation will also promote the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program and how participants can either participate in the program or access the free tax preparation services.

Facilitators: Peggy Chan and Andria Cullen, Liaison Officers, Canada Revenue Agency

Peggy joined the Canada Revenue Agency in 2011 as a Taxpayer Services Agent at the Toronto Centre Call Centre. In 2014, she was offered a position as acting Resource Officer shortly before taking on her new role as Collections Contact Officer at the Toronto Centre Tax Service Office. Since then she has worked in various departments at the TSO including Insolvency, Community Volunteer Income Tax Program, and Outreach. Peggy holds an Honours Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Toronto – St. George Campus with a double major in Sociology and English.

Andria started her career with CRA in 2007 as a Call Centre Agent answering general Income Tax enquires. In 2008, she was trained to answer questions regarding Federal and Provincial Benefit and Credit Entitlements. Andria became a Resource Officer in 2010 assisting phone agents. She provided technical support and feedback to agents regarding the handling of calls. In 2012, Andria was selected to provide New Hire training to new CRA agents and she did so with great success. She spent several years working in Non-filer before recently transitioning to CVITP and finally Community Outreach in 2019.
