Library Carpentry: The UNIX Shell Online

In this workshop, learners can expect to have 3 hours of hands-on programming experience in a friendly, inclusive, beginner-friendly environment! But why learn the UNIX shell? The shell is a great way to be introduced to programming concepts, it enables you to automate repetitive tasks, and it also underpins many other pieces of computing infrastructure.

Participants are required to have a computer where they can use the UNIX shell, and a few files downloaded in advance. Please follow these instructions for set-up: https://librarycarpentry.org/lc-shell/setup.html (participants can email me in advance for help with set-up if needed).

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand when to use the command line
  • Use commands to print, view, move, copy and delete files
  • Implement a loop to rename several files
  • Use the shell to count, sort, and search for data within files
