This workshop is part of the Digital Scholarship Unit's Fun Data Fridays Series.
These events are designed with an hour-long introduction presentation on the topic led by U of T Scarborough Librarian, followed by a peer-to-peer discussion and collaborative learning session. This program is designed to be a forum for how data is used pervasively across all disciplines and troubleshoot your data questions. Our goal is to work together to appreciate the unique issues and opportunities brought forth when discussing data cross-disciplinarily.     

About Understanding SQL 

In this hands-on workshop, participants will be introduced to the fundamentals of Structured Query Language (SQL) using DB Browser for SQLite. Participants will gain practical experience in building and executing basic SQL queries and an understanding of relational databases, enabling them to manage and manipulate data effectively. 

Overall Lesson Objectives 
- Provide learners with an understanding of relationship database principles and usage 
- Describe what SQL is and why it is used alongside relational databases 
- Inform learners about building queries with SQL and implement example queries 

Learning Outcomes 
- Build and queries using SQL 
- Able to explain what a relational database is, as well as where and how they are used  

Prior Knowledge Required
- Basic understanding of data types  
- Basic understanding of spreadsheets
