Amateur Movie Day In-Person

Join us to celebrate Amateur Movie Day on Friday March 13th from 6:00-9:00pm! We'll be screening unique films selected from our archival collections in the University of Toronto, Robarts Theatre (RM 3-025), on the third floor of Robarts Library, 130 St. George Street, Toronto ON.

Unlike home movies, amateur films were polished non-professional short works created by skilled and creative filmmakers or movie clubs, and intended to be viewed outside the home. Produced outside the commercial system, they include dramas, comedies, travel and nature films, and portrayals of everyday life. They often experiment with the film form and are too often remain hidden in histories.

The selected films will be from our Dr. Perry E. Doolittle, Mario Prizek, Gordon Sinclair, and the Society of Canadian Cine Amateurs collections. Plus a very special premiere of a newly acquired film titled, "Thund'ring Hoofs" [1943] by Bob Flynn and M.C. Moultrie. This western was made by workers of a Toronto munitions factory during the Second World War. Not to be missed! A talk by, Christina Stewart, Assistant Media Archivist will precede the screening. The event is free, but registration is required.
