Alexander C. Pathy Lecture on the Book Arts: Beatriz Hausner on Objects of Desire: the publications of Surrealism In-Person
Surrealist publications parallel and reflect the print and book art practices of the time and the places surrealists live in, while at the same time disrupting the tradition in significant ways. Using the collections of the Fisher Library, this talk focuses on limited editions, trade and small press publications, magazines, artist’s books, and other objects, to illustrate how surrealists have collaborated across the globe, for the last 100 years, while adhering to the precepts that define Surrealism as a way of life.
Beatriz Hausner has published several poetry collections, most recently She Who Lies Above, as well as limited-edition chapbooks. Her books have been published internationally and translated into several languages, including her native Spanish. Hausner writes extensively about surrealism; her translations of Spanish American surrealist poets have exerted an important influence on her own writing. A graduate of U of T’s iSchool and its Book History and Print Culture program, Hausner worked as a public librarian for 36 years. She is an editor, was a publisher, was Chair of the PLR Commission, and co-curates the lecture series Soluble Fish.
